A Brief History of IPAs: Myth vs. Reality

India Pale Ales (IPAs) have long been associated with the popular story that British brewers designed them specifically to survive long voyages to India by increasing hop content and alcohol levels. While there's some truth to this idea, the actual history of IPAs is far more nuanced.

Pale Ales in Britain: By the early 18th century, Britain was already brewing pale ales, particularly in Burton-on-Trent, where the water profile suited hoppy, crisp beers.

Beer Exports & The East India Company: British brewers shipped a variety of beers to India, including porters and strong ales. Over time, pale ales with higher hop content proved to fare better in the hot climate.

George Hodgson’s Influence: In the late 1700s, London brewer George Hodgson gained favor with the East India Company by supplying well-hopped pale ales, which aged well over long voyages.

Burton-on-Trent’s Role: By the early 1800s, Burton brewers like Bass and Allsopp refined the IPA style, making it popular both abroad and at home in Britain.

The result? While IPAs became synonymous with export to India, they were never exclusively brewed for that purpose — Britain enjoyed them just as much!

Hops: The Heart of IPAs

Hops are the defining feature of IPAs, giving them their signature bitterness, aroma, and flavor. Some common hop profiles include:

Citrus: Grapefruit, orange, and lemon notes from hops like Citra and Amarillo.

Pine: Classic resinous character from Simcoe and Chinook.

Tropical Fruit: Juicy flavors like mango and pineapple from Mosaic and Galaxy.

Herbal & Earthy: Floral and spicy tones from traditional European hop varieties.

Exploring IPA Styles

IPAs come in a variety of styles, each offering a unique taste experience:

West Coast IPA: Crisp, clear, and assertively bitter with citrus and pine notes.

New England IPA: Hazy, soft, and bursting with juicy, fruit-forward flavors.

Session IPA: A lower-alcohol version that maintains a hoppy character while being more drinkable.

Double IPA (Imperial IPA): Higher alcohol content with an intensified hop presence.
